Every Mamma Mia fan has Greece on their bucket list: a country comprised of a multitude of islands with a Mediterranean climate, glorious beaches and rich history. Oh, and let’s not forget the baklava! My blog posts about Greece:
- Athens and Santorini (2014)
- Video (Greece/Italy/Croatia 2014)
- Capital: Athens
- Population: 10.9 million
- Currency: Euro (€)
- Language: Greek
- Highlights:
- Athens: the capital is situated on the mainland and is famous for its preserved ancient ruins including the Acropolis.
- Santorini: a massive tourist hot-spot formed around a volcano, with white and blue houses and beaches aplenty. Don’t miss the sun setting in Oia.
- Mykonos: “Eat, sleep, rave, repeat” is the mantra of this party island. A prime destination for a boozy time.
- Naxos: the largest Cyclades island, home to beaches, ruins and Mount Zeus. Slightly of the beaten track so a little less touristy.
- Did you know?
- The official name for Greece is the Hellenic Republic
- The 2004 Summer Olympics were held in Athens and since then, the facilities have basically gone to seed
- Football is the national sport of Greece
- Greeks do not wave with an open hand – in fact to do so is an insult. Rather, Greeks will wave with their palms closed.
- The national anthem of Greece has 158 verses.
- Useful tips:
- Cash is king. A lot of places in Greece will only accept cash so make sure you carry some at all times.
- About 1 in 2 Greek people smoke. Prepare yourself!
- Drink bottled water on the islands but you should be okay to drink from the tap on the mainland (check with your accommodation if you are unsure).
- Don’t flush toilet paper – bins are provided for this.
