Forever on a quest to find the best donuts, Knead Artisan Donuts in New Plymouth sure did make a great submission. It is only open a couple of days a week, so our plan was to drive there before we began our journey back to Napier and grab some for the road. Andy and I had spent a couple of days in New Plymouth and it is fair to say that we hadn’t really encountered many crowds. Partly because it was mid-week, a few weeks before Christmas, and partly because the weather was terrible. Needless to say, it was a bit of a shock when we pulled up at Knead and there was a line of at least fifteen people!
We had driven all this way for donuts, so we weren’t about to leave without some. We got in line and waited our turn. Thankfully the line moved relatively quickly – takeaway only and no coffees really helps speed things along. We got to the front and picked out two – the

We had driven all this way for donuts, so we weren’t about to leave without some. We got in line and waited our turn. Thankfully the line moved relatively quickly – takeaway only and no coffees really helps speed things along. We got to the front and picked out two – the ferrer rocher and the Christmas themed one. The ferrer rocher was filled with nutella and came with a wafer and the Christmas themed one was glazed with white chocolate, pistachio and freeze dried raspberry. Probably no surprise, but the ferrer rocher donut was far more sickly and decadent than the Christmas one. Both were extremely tasty – the dough itself was light, fresh and chewy.
With an assortment of different flavours and two releases each day (so that if you can’t come early, you can still go late and have a chance of getting the flavour of your choice) it wasn’t hard to see why Knead has become such a popular little neighbourhood spot. Yum!
