Shepherd (1/5 Eva Street)
Opening just prior to Wellington on a Plate 2016, this little gem is yet another one of Leeds Street’s babies (technically Eva Street, but for all other purposes it’s Leeds Street) and I was fortunate enough to try it during one of the events I went to. It certainly left me wanting more though, I couldn’t wait to go back and sample the actual menu. A joint venture by two of our favourites, Shepherd Elliott (Leeds Street Bakery, Ti Kouka Café) and Sean Golding (Golding’s Free Dive), the food is fresh, local and ethically sourced. The ambience is terrific; you can arrive almost any time and the place will be pumping – I was amazed when I was there past 10pm and people were still arriving. If you look past the ridiculously bright online menu, to what is actually on the menu and you will undoubtedly be pleasantly surprised. There is a range of goodies; some mouth-watering, some intriguing (but which are sure to be mouth-watering) and the staff are all helpful, knowledgeable and engaging. The pikelets are a must try, and oysters are an added bonus. Probably sits at a 4 out of 5 on the price radar, but a 5 out of 5 on the enjoyable experience scale!
